Why ‘Eating the Frog’ Isn’t the Best Productivity Strategy and What to Do Instead

If you spend any length of time reading productivity articles, you will eventually come across the concept of accomplishing your hardest task first in the course of your day, otherwise known as ‘eating the frog’. The idea is that it is best to tackle the more difficult projects when you are fresh and have plenty of willpower, before the day runs away from you.

Plenty of articles list the benefits of eating the frog first, and for some people diving straight into work can be a great strategy. Even knowing the benefits, it can still be a challenge to implement this strategy for maximum productivity.

One issue with ‘eating the frog’ is that while on paper (or the internet) it can seem like a no brainer; in reality it can be quite difficult to engage with your most challenging project first thing if you have not trained your brain for deep focus. Even if you intend to work first thing on the most difficult task, distractions have a way of creeping into our thoughts and very quickly derailing what was supposed to be an incredibly productive workday.

This is the nature of who we are as human beings. We have evolved to pay attention to our environment, but nowadays it has become negative with consistent vibrations of a smartphone or the tap tap on a keyboard.

To keep distractions at bay, start to develop a practice of focus. This will make ‘eating the frog’ easier to do on a regular basis. You can start to retrain your brain by engaging in simple planning at the beginning of each day. With this in mind, you can ease into the day, otherwise the levels of stress hormones that peak right before waking never quite go down and we are constantly in a flight or fight response, zapping your energy.

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.” – Eckhart Tolle

Plan to spend a specific amount of time at the start of each workday on routine administrative tasks such as email and to engage in batch processing wherever possible. Doing so will keep these tasks from occupying your working memory allowing you to more efficiently switch your focus to big picture project items and effectively manage your time.

Finishing even a small task can also give you a boost of satisfaction at having accomplished something early on in the day because it primes your brain to desire future wins. Otherwise, it may be difficult to settle into a state of deep work when you awake because those small tasks will remain at the forefront of your mind, reducing your ability for creative and innovative thinking.

A simple yet effective plan is to devote the first 15-30 minutes of your day to checking your email/voicemail and make any necessary adjustments to the day. To make sure you do not go over the time you allotted for yourself for these tasks, it’s important you only respond to urgent or important calls or emails first and save the rest for later.

A half hour may not seem like enough time if you typically have an overflowing inbox waiting for you but you can always check it at other times of the day. It’s a huge productivity killer to spend your peak energy hours wading through your inbox instead of making real progress right away. Next, make any necessary changes to your overall strategy for tackling the day.

“My goal is no longer to get more done, but rather to have less to do.” – Francine Jay

If you need to schedule a meeting or cancel an appointment, do so during this period of time. Complete any lingering work from the day before that can quickly be done, and gather any materials you need for the main project of the day. By doing this, you will be more likely to enter into a state of flow once you get started on your more difficult task.

After completing these tasks, you can more efficiently transition to your more difficult or time-consuming projects for the day by temporarily silencing the push notifications of your brain. If you need to set an alarm on your computer or phone to get you to disconnect from these more administrative tasks after 15-30 minutes, do so. It’s a small change, but over time will pay dividends especially by reducing the urge to multitask, the ultimate productivity killer.

3 Powerful Questions Which Will Increase Your Chances of Success

Many people think that if they work hard, be the first person in the office and the last one to leave at night that they will be successful. Entrepreneurs put in 50 to 60 hours a week chasing success as they slowly burn out. The reality is that success is often closer than you realize and it depends on how you think about it and what questions you ask yourself.

As you pursue the path to success, whatever that means to you, the questions you ask yourself are ultra important and can shape your success. If your mindset goes to dark places when things don’t go as planned, you may be someone always asking yourself “Why me?” This question will not get you closer to your goals. It is a disempowering question because your brain will attempt to answer it with negative answers.

For example, if you didn’t get that contract that you pitched, when you ask the ‘why me’ question, you blame yourself and even others. You might say you quoted too high, you said the wrong thing in the meeting, or that your assistant delivered the proposal late.

Instead, ask yourself how you can do better next time. Find out what you needed to do to secure the contract and use it to fuel the next proposal. Powerful questions can change your state and catapult you quickly into a more positive frame of mind, which helps you on your journey to success.

Here are 3 powerful questions you can ask yourself every day to increase your chances of success:

1. What Am I Capable Of?

This is a little bit of a trick question. No one REALLY knows what they are capable of. We set boundaries for ourselves that limit and define us. That keeps us small. It is important to think big – so much bigger than you even think is possible. Other people will try to knock you down for thinking what THEY think is possible, but in reality no one ever truly knows what is possible.

Many times from great adversity comes our greatest achievements. Until something happens to you that tests you, you may not even know you were capable of getting through something, let alone thrive from it. Consider the proverbial “Rags to Riches” stories that are so popular. If any of the people in those stories forced limitations on themselves, they would not have achieved greatness.

When you ask yourself what you are capable of, let your mind go wild. Remember, only a few short years ago, we could not have conceived of watching full movies on a small handheld device. The possibilities are endless.

“The mind is what the mind is fed.” – David J. Schwartz

2. Who Do My Closest Allies Need To Be?

Jim Rohn famously said we are the average of the five people we associate with the most. Take a look at your own life and make note of who your closest allies are now. Are they the ones you need to be with to achieve your goals? If not, start making conscious choices to go and meet the people that are like-minded and will support you on your road to success. By identifying and spending time with the right people, you’ll increase your chances for success.

3. Who Do I Need To Become?

Picture yourself starring in a movie. In this role, consider what that person would look like when he is successful. Notice the traits or habits you practice. How you handle situations and adversity, as well as the good times when you become that successful person is important. Once you are clear on who this person is, become that person now. Practice becoming your movie star every day and keep growing as you fit into the role.

“What we think, we become.” – Buddha

Ask yourself these powerful questions every day and for each aspect of your life. For example, you can use these for your relationships, for career and even for your health. You will find increased success in all of those areas of your life.

15 Things Crazy, Insane, Passionate, Successful People Do Differently

Over the last three years, I’ve gone on one hell of a journey. I’ve met people who’ve created life-changing, not for profits, I’ve met billionaires, I’ve met Prime Ministers and I’ve hung out with the next generation of millennials who are going to change the world.

Through these interviews and meetings I’ve learned so much and it would be criminal of me not to share what these group of individuals do.

I feel like I’ve been able to peek behind a door that contains all of the treasures needed to succeed in life and business. It’s time for me to share that with you. Here we go.

1. They challenge the word “no”

Successful people don’t bend over when someone asks them too. They constantly challenge every single person that dares to tell them no. They believe that they can turn any no into a yes, and that no is just a temporary setback in their mind to achieving their ultimate goal.

No means they’re on the right track and taking action rather than frothing at ideas and what might be possible.

2. They disrupt the status quo

These crazy successful people are rebels at heart. Wherever or whatever they are doing, they’re disrupting the way things are done. They are championing for change and they don’t apologize for it. They know the solution to the problem lies in doing something completely and utterly insane.

3. They wake up before sunrise

You’ve heard it all before compadre haven’t you? Get up early and all your dreams will come true because you’ll have more time. Guess what? It’s true and that’s why you hear it regularly. Sleeping in is what’s killing your success.

You need time to make your goals come true and those extra minutes you need are found in the early hours of the morning. Without fail, I haven’t met a successful person who doesn’t wake before sunrise. Time is the only resource we all have equal amounts of so use it instead of wasting it.

4. They have a zero care factor

You don’t like what they’re doing? They don’t care. You think they’re crazy? They would probably agree because they hate mediocre which is the other option. How about opinions, do they care about them? Only when it’s warranted and helps the cause.

Successful people don’t care about trying to please everyone or about whether or not people agree with them. They are the rebels with a cause and caring about the insignificant distracts them from smashing their goals out of the park.

5. They are loaded with energy and fired up

These passionate people are loaded with energy and they let you know it. They don’t hold back and know that the key to convincing you of their grand plan, is to demonstrate it through their energy.

Successful people are fired up about what they are doing and they won’t be happy until they achieve their mission.

To support this mission they take care of themselves by eating foods that fuel their body and exercising to get the blood flowing.

They know that movement and vibrancy are infectious and people are attracted to this state of being like a magnet.

“The difference between a good idea and a bad one is often enthusiasm and passion. Successful people can make bloody breakfast cereal sound incredible”

6. They are relentless

When everybody else has given up trying to launch the rocket into space, successful people are still trying. No strategy will go untested and no obstacle is too big. They’re prepared to fail one thousand times in a row because there is a chance that on attempt number one thousand and one, things might fall into place and happen.

This may sound like they’re overly optimistic, but really they are just relentless in their pursuits. It’s their mindset that is centered around positivity that allows them to think this way. They’re fighting against their flawed human brain which takes guts and a lot of hard work.

“It’s not easy being relentless, but it’s necessary for greatness”

7. They time box social media

The understanding that social media is designed to hook you in, waste your time and then make you take an action you hadn’t previously planned, is a concept that insane, successful people understand. For this reason, they time box social media.

They use social media to get their message out, create content and get ideas. The difference is that they know how addictive and time wasting it can be to so they limit it to short bursts once or twice a day. They’ve found a way to suppress the dopamine hits that social media gives them.

8. They listen intently and take notes

Talking too much is what is killing your success. Crazy successful people listen to what others have to say, and then they filter out what is not relevant to their mission. They also take stupid amounts of notes because that’s how they retain and sort everything they’ve learned.

Successful people don’t trust their brain to remember anything. By having things stored in the form of notes, it allows their mind to be free and focus on creating cool and interesting ideas which they can then execute on.

9. They lock everything into their calendar instantly

You’ll never ask a successful person for their time without seeing them look at their calendar. Everything is scheduled in their diary except time with their family, which is a must.

They spend time asking what the meeting is about up front and they know how wasteful meetings for the sake of meetings can be. Their calendar also has parts of the daytime blocked for thinking, eating, exercising and creating.

10. They take time to chill the F out

Always being “ON” is a passionate, successful persons biggest enemy. Having intense energy requires gaps of nothingness in the form of travel. Every successful person I have met spends time scheduling travel to escape the patterns and routines they have become so accustomed to.

Time to decompress and think about what they’ve achieved so far is the therapy they need to not become consumed by all the failure they must endure on the road to greatness.

11. “No” is the most frequent word they use

The word “no” is a successful person’s most used word. Being focused is high on their priorities and so anything that doesn’t align with their mission is ignored. They use the hell yes or hell no response in their head to quickly decide what to say yes to.

If their instant reaction to an opportunity isn’t hell yes and they don’t feel inspired by the request, then they say “no.” To do anything else would be risky to their grand plan and potentially hijack what they have dedicated their life to. That’s not a sacrifice they are willing to make, so no becomes the default response.

12. Serving others is at the core of what they do

Whether it’s serving a community, customers, employees, or people in need, successful people serve someone other than themselves. It’s this mission of service that all of their ideas revolve around. For them, it’s about doing something that is bigger than themselves that leaves a legacy beyond their own human existence.

When they combine this commitment to service with their passion for what they do, people are attracted to their cause. It makes their success look so easy when in actual fact it’s very misleading. It’s taken them years to realize that they want to serve others with all of the passion in their body.

They didn’t just wake up one day and realize this crucial universal law called “serving others.” It took many traps like money, toxic relationships and addictions to get down to the core of their existence.

13. They see money as a resource to fuel their dreams

Successful people think about money completely different. They see money as a resource to help them reach more people and make a bigger difference. Money to them is not about some selfish goal to buy luxury items and show off or prove others wrong.

Money is a means to change the world in some significant way.

14. They have a two-line mission statement

All of these crazy, successful people can tell you their mission in two sentences or less. The core idea that their life revolves around is so concrete in their mind that it only needs two lines to explain it.

“Being able to get to the point so quickly, with so few words, has taken them years to figure out”

They have repeatedly thought about what their life is going to mean when they are dead and that’s why now it seems their mission is so clear. It’s with deliberate thinking that they figured out their intention, not by accident. Everything you want happens when you keep taking action.

15. They inspire people

The final thing these crazy, insane, passionate, successful people do differently is inspire people. A conversation with them is uplifting and it changes the way you think. They create a feeling inside of you that feels good and makes you want to achieve some significant goal in your own life.

They’re inspirational because they are trying to create change. It’s addictive to see someone taking action and getting the rewards for doing so. We can all be inspiring and be successful just like these rare individuals I’ve spoken about.

It’s a choice. Are you willing to make it and accept the sacrifices, hard work and mindset that is required to be in this class of crazy, successful people?

5 Tactics to Improve the Quality of Your Life From Harvard’s Most Popular Course Creator

Everyone wants to be happy, just ask Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, he’s an expert on the subject. Tal created the most popular courses in Harvard University’s history: Positive Psychology and The Psychology of Leadership. Tal is a best selling author, entrepreneur, and speaker who currently works with groups and companies around the globe on a variety of topics.

As most of us know, it’s not always easy to stay in a happy state. Inevitably things will slow us down, and make us feel burdened or frustrated. Luckily, by using Tal’s tactics he taught to thousands at Harvard, we can maximize the positive and minimize the negative.

Tal recently sat down with The Science of Success and unveiled five key tactics to improve your quality of life that he lives by each day. Check them out below:

1. Awareness

“The best predictor of future behavior, is past behavior”, advises Tal. Think back to a time when you were truly leading a happy life engaged in meaningful experiences. What were you doing? Who were you doing it with? Using past reflection, identify what it was that caused these moments to be so great, then ask “How can I have more of it?” Cultivate an active willingness and desire to replicate these good experiences.

2. Relationships

Can you guess which countries are the happiest in the world according to the UN? The answers are Denmark, Australia, Colombia, Israel, and Holland. While some of these you might expect, places such as Israel and Columbia may come as a surprise.

So why are these countries ranked as the happiest? Relationships. Tal explains that, “In each of these countries there is a real importance, encouragement, and emphasis on establishing and cultivating intimate and healthy social networks.” It can come from various places such as religious organizations, sports, or clubs. Nonetheless, in each study an emphasis was found on cultivating meaningful relationships having a direct link to happiness. Go in search of likeminded individuals who share your passions and hobbies and get involved.

“Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow.” – Swedish Proverb

3. Physical Activity

Keeping your body moving is not only a great way to cultivate physical health, but mental health as well. Tal recommends “regular exercise for at least 30 minutes, three times a week.” Aside from helping prevent chronic disease and improve physical health, exercise releases norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain.

These chemicals put your brain in a happy state and help you stay there longer, free of side effects! Dust off that bike, put on some tennis shoes, take that yoga class, and get your body moving at least 90 minutes a week. Your brain (and body) will thank you.

4. Learn From Failure

Cultivate a growth mindset when it comes to failure. We all are unhappy when we fail notes Tal, “but there are two very different kinds of responses. One is “This is awful. This is terrible. Now I’m never going to succeed and I’m a failure.” OR “Okay, I failed. It’s not pleasant, not fun, but what can I learn from it? How can I move forward? How can I go ahead wiser from this experience?”

Everyone in life will fail now and again, and often our failures are the most enlightening experiences. Some of history’s smartest and most successful people can attest to this. It’s the ability to emerge smarter and wiser from the experience that separates those who find success and those who bury themselves in negativity.

“Remember your dreams and fight for them. You must know what you want from life. There is just one thing that makes your dream become impossible: the fear of failure.” – Paulo Coelho

5. Don’t Expect To Always Be Happy

As Tal likes to say, “there are only two kinds of people who do not experience painful emotions…the first are psychopaths, and the second are dead people.” If you expect to always be happy then you are saying it’s OK to punish yourself when you feel negative emotions.

Paradoxically, by accepting these negative or painful emotions you are allowing yourself to let them pass. By fighting them, we only keep them in our focus longer. So embrace you feeling these emotions because, after all, that means you’re not a psychopath and that you’re alive!

Turn Your Struggles Into Success With These 2 Mindset Shifts

Mindset is everything. The gurus tell us this and it is true.  Your mindset is the beliefs you carry in your head about you and your abilities will determine how far you go in life.  If you believe you are born to struggle, you will be suspicious of anything offering you an opportunity to stop struggling. You will feel completely justified in holding yourself back because your mind is okay thinking it is normal to struggle.

A few days ago, I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and came across an advert by one of the big names in the personal development field.  He was promoting a book that had the word “millionaire” in the title.  It seemed interesting so I wanted to see reviews of the book and I realized what a mistake it was to scroll through the comments.

It shocked me to see the bile that people posted on there in between the ‘I am so thankful for you’ comments. I felt pity for these negative nellies because in their mind, they were justified in speaking badly about someone else’s success.  Their mindset has them thinking it is impossible to succeed towards becoming a millionaire. Due to this, they chose to make sure that everyone else KNEW how they felt and did not get ‘taken in’ by the supposed scam.

The truth is, it was all in their mind.  If someone else has a form of success you desire, there is nothing stopping you from doing what they did and creating it for yourself unless you tell yourself that you cannot.

These negative nellies had told themselves they could not and now, decided to share their pain with everyone else by projecting it on the successful person. They keep themselves trapped in a continuous negative mindset so they try bringing others down instead of pulling themselves up.

Mindset is everything.

Take a moment to write down what you desire and as you write, check yourself for resistance to the idea.  Write down what the resistance is and what it feels like.

Whether you realize it or not, your internal resistance is probably determining what you allow yourself to create. For example, I went from working full time as a pharmacist to more than replacing my income in my own business.

“Happiness depends on your mindset and attitude.” – Roy T. Bennett

Here are two mindset shifts which will change your life if you do the internal work needed to believe:

1. Waiting for a Saviour

As a spiritual person, I had been brought up to pray and wait on the will of Spirit before taking any moves.  I would sing songs like ‘Pray until something happens’ and I was a hard worker so I kept waiting for my ship to come find me.

I kept thinking because I felt called to business, then the Spirit/Universe/Higher Power would send somebody to me whom I would discover and then all doors would open towards success.

I prepared myself for the day when everything would go my way.  I made my struggle at the time a spiritual thing. As a singer, I would even create songs about how my time was coming one day.

You may read this and smile, thinking how silly does one need to be to believe that but think about your life. Are you hoping a day will come where someone discovers you and tells you that you are allowed to go after what you truly want?

At what moment exactly do you think you will be ready to prosper? Who needs to give you permission first? Have you also spiritualized your struggle like I did, or are you taking full responsibility for creating the life you desire?

“There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.” – Aristotle

2. I am ____________ and so therefore, I struggle

What is your particular belief of choice making you think you deserve to struggle?  Maybe, you think that your skin color, your past, or your lack of time means you will struggle more than most.

Perhaps, you say your lack of technical skills means you can never get your online business off the ground. Maybe you are broke at the moment and you think that means you cannot get anything started because “everyone knows you need money to make money”.

You will always experience what you believe to be true because you will simply not put all your effort into creating a new reality.

Understand this: You will ALWAYS prove yourself right. ALWAYS! Decide no matter what seems to stand in your way, you will choose to prosper.

These are two beliefs that if you will do the work of shifting the way you think and replacing negativity with more empowering beliefs such as I am fully responsible for my success in life, I am a creator, and I can create my new reality, you will prove yourself right!

Read books to reinforce your chosen beliefs and stories of those who have overcome incredible odds to succeed and tell yourself that you are capable of doing the same.

Take massive action and do not be deterred from your goal.

Which one of the two beliefs do you need to shift? Comment below and let us know!
