Weird And Beautiful Photos Of Hungary’s Bizarre Busó Festival

Every year in the South of Hungary, the men of Mohács put on weird, handmade masks and shaggy wool coats to scare the winter away.

These characters are called "Busós". They’re mischievous and mysterious, visiting houses (sometimes uninvited) and entertaining people around the village. The Busós also have sidekicks, teenagers from the village who dress as "Jenkeles" and help facilitate the mischievous fun.

This series of photos was shot by Hungarian travel photographer Zsolt Repasy as a peek behind the scenes of the ancient tradition.

"Instead of documenting the tradition (as it’s been documented countless times already) my goal was to submerge and “go backstage”, be an insider and show this beautiful and rich tradition from the viewpoint of the busós," Repasy says of his work.
