These Incredibly Detailed Portraits Are Actually Body Art

Russell Powell is a first-grade teacher from San Jose, California who created a new form of body art known as "hand-stamping."

It’s kind of like making a hand print in grade school, only much more involved.

Powell creates surprisingly detailed portraits by first painting his hand with oil paint and then pressing his palm to the canvas. The various shades of black, gray, and white transfer to the new surface to complete the piece.

Follow Powell’s "hand stamp" portrait series here on Instagram.

By the way, if you’re thinking about trying the technique, he’s included nifty behind-the-scenes shots to clue you in.
