Ochs und Junior is unlike any other watch brand. The pared-down aesthetic and mechanical discipline almost border on austerity, but combined with a sense of levity and creativity they make the brand one of my personal favorites. Today, Ochs und Junior is launching a major update to its much-loved customizer tool (which we first covered here) that brings a new watch and a number of new features to the party.
The most notable update is that the Perpetual Calendar, first released last summer, is now available on the customizer. Prior to today, if you wanted to place an order for a customized Perpetual Calendar, you’d have to do some back-and-forth with the Ochs und Junior team, who could make you mock-ups of your ideas before you committed. However, now you can do it all yourself, playing around with different dial colors, disc combinations, and straps, whenever you want. You should definitely check out our full hands-on look at the Perpetual Calendar if you haven’t already.
The interface looks cleaner than ever, and on a desktop or laptop you can get a nice big rendering of your watch ideas, along with tons of room to breathe. However, Ochs und Junior has also now optimized the customizer for mobile and everything is always displayed at Retina resolution, so everything will now look great on your iPhone, iPad, Pixel, Galaxy,
Palm Pilot, etc. I’ve already wasted away an embarrassing amount of time flicking through Annual Calendar set-ups on my commute.
It’s worth mentioning at this point that the customizer barely scratches the surface of what Ochs und Junior can do. The company is tiny (just four people) and only makes about 150 watches per year. Every single watch is sold directly to the end customer, since there are no retailers or wholesalers. You can work with Beat Weinmann, one of Ochs und Junior’s co-founders, to create sometime totally outside the box if you’d prefer. The customizer, however, is a pretty great place to start.
